Omnition Signs Definitive Agreement to be Acquired by Splunk

Published by Spiros Xanthos on

I am pleased to announce that we have entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Splunk!

In 2018, we founded Omnition to build the most powerful Observability platform, making distributed tracing the core of it. We realized the prior generation monitoring and troubleshooting tools that some of us helped build are inadequate for the complexities of microservice-based, cloud-native applications.

We questioned many of the established assumptions and built the first distributed tracing platform to achieve full fidelity data collection (100% of traces) for very large, production workloads. Our focus on top down analysis and intuitive visualization of traces allows developers and SREs to focus on what they do best: build and maintain great software as opposed to becoming observability tools experts.

We also committed to democratize telemetry instrumentation and collection. We joined Google and Microsoft in building OpenCensus, and co-founded its successor, OpenTelemetry, an open source and open standards telemetry instrumentation and collection framework. Through this, we aspire to eliminate much of the instrumentation friction, and make tracing ubiquitous. As a result, users can control their data and choose the best observability solution for their needs without vendor lock-in.

Omnition + Splunk

We are in full alignment with Splunk on our approach to distributed tracing, our commitment to OpenTelemetry, and our vision of a tightly integrated Observability platform that combines traces, metrics and logs. By joining forces we can accelerate this vision and help our customers accelerate their own cloud native journey.

Furthermore, we are confident the values and product principles shared by Omnition and Splunk will allow for our team and product to achieve their full potential inside Splunk.

Finally, a thank you note

We got to this point because we are fortunate to work with visionary and forward-looking customers and partners who helped us define a new approach to distributed tracing. I would like to thank all of them for trusting us to be their distributed tracing solution early on. We remain committed to their success and will continue collaborating and innovating at an accelerated pace to deliver insights across the entire enterprise application stack. The best is yet to come!

Finally, and most importantly, I would like to thank the Omnition team. It’s the best team I have ever been a part of and look forward to working with all of them for many more years at Splunk as we help the company build the best Observability platform.

Please stay tuned for more announcements as we come out of stealth, now as part of Splunk!
